The Excellent Old Ballad of Chevy
The Excellent Old Ballad of Chevy Chace Broadside Describing the Battle of Otterburn English broadside ca 17th century. Folio approx. 9.5 x 14.25 in. The ballad is recorded in the Stationer's Register (London) an early claim to the rights of printing similar to later copyrights in 1624 although it certainly predates that as folk lore. Subtitled: Describing the woeful Hunting Match on Cheviot Hills with the bloody fight between the Earls Percy and Douglas. While some trace the ballad to the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 others think it describes the Battle of Piperden (Pepperden) between Henry Percy of Northumberland and William Douglas Earl of Angus a more private border feud (i.e. not a national war) fought in 1435 or 1436. It is thought to be a variant of The Hunting of Cheviot which was old in the mid-sixteenth century. There are apparently many ballads that used the same tune although that is not reproduced on this early broadside. ''Back in the day'' everyone knew all the ballad tunes but musical notations as we understand them today did not exist. Notations did exist of course in churches and a few other contexts. European notation was not standarized until about the end of the 17th century and then not read by very many. Condition: Toned old fold with small hole affecting only one letter. Edges somewhat scuffed with bits of paper loss (esp. lower left) not affecting text.

BOOK: ANCIENT EGYPTIANS, WILKINSON,
BOOK: ANCIENT EGYPTIANS, WILKINSON, 1854Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians by Sir J. Gardener Wilkinson, London, 1854. 2 Volumes. Illustrated. Some wear to full leather covers. Each measure 7" tall. Part of a collection of books from Dromoland Castle in today's sale. Provenance: Dromoland Castle, County Clare, Ireland. From the library of Sir Edward O'Brien, 2nd Baronet (1705-1765), inherited by his son, Sir Lucius O'Brien, 3rd Baronet (1731-1795), then by his son, Sir Edward O'Brien, 4th Baronet (1773-1837). The library was pretty much intact until 1962, when Donough O'Brien, the 16th Baron Inchiquin, was forced to sell the castle and its contents at public auction. The December 1962 sale -- conducted by James Adams & Sons of Dublin -- was attended by Gioia Marconi Braga, the daughter of Beatrice O'Brien and inventor Guglielmo Marconi. O'Brien was the daughter of the 14th Baron Inchiquin (1839-1900). Braga purchased a number of volumes from the auction and brought them to the U.S. Thence by descent in the family. shipping info This lot can be shipped in-house.
