NEW YORK CITY DOCUMENTS, 1792TwoNEW YORK CITY DOCUMENTS, 1792Two indentures, both signed by New York lawyer and legislator Gilbert Livingston, dated 1792. Livingston was a delegate to the Poughkeepsie Convention who first opposed, then eventually voted to ratify, the U.S. Constitution. Both indentures measure about 17" x 11", with (unrepaired but clean) split seams, as shown in images.
Provenance: Obtained directly from a collection of historical paper items -- from the Ashfield, Skaats and McNeal families of New York -- none of which has ever been offered for sale. Several lots of these papers, including historically important pieces, are being offered in today's auction. The family, represented in several of the items in the collection, owned land directly adjacent to Wall Street, and some of the pieces refer to these parcels.

LARGE ENGLISH VELLUM INDENTURELARGE ENGLISH VELLUM INDENTURE DOCUMENT, 1792**Originally Listed At $400**
Northern Europe, Great Britain, Central England, Oxford / Northamptonshire County, Banbury / Boddington, ca. January 12, 1792 CE. A fascinating and quite sizeable vellum document accounting the details of an indentureship in which William Lawrence the Elder of Banbury is to pay 40 pounds to Fiennes Wykham of Banbury for the use of 5 bays in a building, as well as a barn gate house, a sow horse, a plot of land, and other farming houses and equipment in Boddington in the county of Northamptonshire. The indentureship is witnessed by William Bultin and William Lawrence the Younger, whose wax seals are both featured at the bottom, below 54 lines of handwritten English. Alternatively, the top of the verso features a written agreement signed by William Lawrence the Younger of Walsingham stating that he witnessed the indentureship. The center of the verso also states, "W. Lawrence / to / W. F. Wykham / Mortgage to secure 40…" Additionally, a stamp of King George III presents on the left side of the verso. Size: 25.875" L x 31.5" W (65.7 cm x 80 cm)
Note the zigzagged border along the top of the document - indenture documents were written in duplicate on the same sheet of vellum and separated by cutting along a jagged (or toothed, hence the term "indenture") line so that the 2 pieces could later be reunited to confirm authenticity, with each party of the agreement retaining a part.
