INDIAN BOWL. Southwest late 19th-early 20th century earthenware. Low bowl with interior painted designs.3 1/2''h. 8 1/2''d. Collected by Charles Shanafelt ca. 1900. Wear chips. Charles Shanafelt (b. 1855) was the senior member of the brickmaking firm of Shanafelt and Keurt. He collected the Cochiti figures offered here about 1900 and about 1915 they were placed in the ''relic room'' of an Ohio county courthouse. They remained there until later in the twentieth century they were transferred to a local historical institution. That institution has deaccessioned this collection and is selling it to further its mission.

INDUS VALLEY POTTERY BOWL W/ HEXAGONAL MOTIFAncient Near East / Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan / Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2300 to 1900 BCE. A pretty pottery bowl presenting impressively thin walls that rise straight up to a gently flared rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Enveloped in a creamy beige slip, the elegant vessel is skillfully adorned on its exterior with a horizontal band of black-painted, striated hexagons flanked above and below by a series of black and red horizontal lines. An additional black striation encircles the interior of the rim, followed by a thick red ring. Size: 5" Diameter x 3.3" H (12.7 cm x 8.4 cm)

Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan / Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery bowl with a planar base, a wide body, inward-angled walls, a deep interior cavity, and a thin rim decorated with a thick, dark-brown stripe on the inside. The exterior is painted with a wondrous zoomorphic register including a bird with a broad tail, spindly legs, an aquiline beak, and wide wings boasting blue and white feathers as well as a bird-headed lion with a sinuous tail, a striped body, and one front paw extended. Two wide panels of abstract linear and geometric motifs separate the two figures, and all painted details are presented atop a pale orange ground. Size: 5.125" W x 2.925" H (13 cm x 7.4 cm).

Condition:
Vessel repaired from a few large pieces with resurfacing, overpainting, and earthen stabilization material along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to rim, body, and base, with overpainting along some painted details, and light roughness across most surfaces. Nice earthen deposits and light root marks throughout.
