Robert Indiana was an American artist who played a central role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting, and Pop-art. The Order of the Owls was founded in 1904 in South Bend, Indiana by John W. Talbot. Membership consisted of men across a variety of professions whose mission focused on improving the general welfare of members and their families.
According to U.S. Federal Census returns, Elmer Bain (1873-1942) owned a poultry farm in Union, Indiana. He and his wife, Ida, had two sons.

US CONSTITUTION, THE CONNECTICUT COURANT, 1787 The Connecticut Courant, dated Oct 22,1787 being number 1187, this unbound example comes mounted in an ornate black double sided glass frame, reporting on the debates of the Constitutional Convention, also provides a full list of delegates, in Hartford, to vote for the ratification of the new Federal Constitution which was adopted just one month before on September, 17, 1787. Also contains two full pages plus of advertisements. Important content leading up the ratification of the Constitution of the states of which Connecticut did ratify 3 months later on January 9th 1788 making Connecticut the fifth state to ratify the Constitution. One known copy of this paper resides at the Jonathan Krause Rare Newspaper and Magazine Collection at Indiana University.

JOSEPH MEERT (1905-1990) GRAPHITE ON PAPERJoseph John Paul Meert (1905-1990)Sawing Wood (Circa 1935)The 1930s Regionalist genre scene of men working a portable saw mill powered by a make-do assembly of a gas-powered engine cooled by a Model A automobile radiator and fed fuel by a steel drum behind a clapboard house is signed by the artist in pencil lower right on the original mount and titled in the same hand lower left.In the 1993 exhibition catalog for Under The Influence:The Students of Thomas Hart Benton at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri by Mariane Berardi, she describes Joe Meert as, 'A reticent man, dreamer, who painted beautiful pictures with a poetic brush.' and says that he was ...'generally acknowledged to be (one of) Benton's favorite pupils at the Art Student League...' in New York City.At about the time this drawing was done, Meert, 'followed Benton to the Kansas City Art Institute in 1935 where he served as Benton's assistant in the painting department. During his tenure at the Art Institute, Meert produced Post Office murals under the patronage of the WPA in Marceline and Mount Vernon, Missouri and in Spencer, Indiana.'Sight size measures 12.75 x 15.25 with a framed size of 22.25 x 24.5 inches.Very good condition, noting the work is trimmed to the image but the important parts remain intact and free from damage, repair or stain.
