- Lew Wallace ALS 1886 1p 6 x 7.5
Lew Wallace ALS 1886 1p 6 x 7.5 in. Crawfordsville (IN) 5 Apr. 1886. Recipient unknown. Suggests a date to appear in Lafayette. Indiana native Lew Wallace came from a family involved in public service and the military. His father was a graduate of West Point and served as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of the state. Wallace was a law student when war broke out with Mexico in 1846. He raised a militia company and his unit was part of Zachary Taylor's army. After returning to Indiana in 1847 he went back to his studies and was admitted to the bar in 1849. When the Civil War erupted he again became involved in raising troops as state adjutant general. Shortly thereafter he was appointed Colonel of the 11th Indiana and sent to western Virginia before coming back to serve with Grant in the Tennessee Valley. He eventually retired as a Major General. Although his commands were somewhat controversial Wallace served through the war. He was part of the commission that tried the Lincoln conspirators and the court-martial of Henry Wirz commandant of Andersonville prison camp. After the war he became governor of New Mexico Territory during which time the Lincoln County War erupted and later was appointed U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire. From the time of its publication in 1880 Ben Hur has not been out of print. It was the best-selling book (other than the Bible) since Uncle Tom's Cabin not to be surpassed until Gone with the Wind was published in 1936. The book was the first and one of very few works of fiction to be blessed by the Pope. Condition: Folds and light toning as expected.
