This drawing was removed from a portfolio of 30 works to which we will be selling over time with examples spanning from the early 1900's to his later modernist works of the 1940's during WWII.

C. 1870-1890 SIOUX INDIAN RANCHER BISON HERDThis is an original photograph circa 1870-1890 of a Sioux Indian ranchers Bison / Buffalo herd on the old Sioux Reserve near Forest City, South Dakota. The original photograph shows 11 early American Bison Buffalo on the Plains of South Dakota mounted to a photographic cabinet or boudoir card. The back is written in fountain pen ink, “Herd of bison kept by an Indian rancher on the old Sioux Reserve near Forest City, S.D.” Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The cabinet card measures 6.5” by 4.25”.

FOUR INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTINGS OF HUNT SCENES 18th or 19th century, meticulous ink painting with colored opaque paint and gilt highlights, includes four hunting scenes, some with blackbucks and lions, some with females hunting, a variety of weapons: bow and arrows, guns, and spears, lush vegetation fills the scenes, each with black and red line borders, framed in identical gold frames with silk mats, not examined outside of the frames.

19TH C. CABINET CARD OF NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILYLate nineteenth century cabinet card depicting an unusual view of what appears to be a Northern Plains Tribe Native American Indian family. Seated man wearing a buffalo horn headdress with a buffalo skin cap and a large central embellishment, possibly a mirror within a frame signifying he is part of the Lakota Sioux Badger Society. He is carrying a bow in a sheath and multiple arrows at the ready with their arrowheads visible. He is wearing fringed hide trousers and a tunic and wearing what appears to be an elk tooth necklace and appears to be wearing a tobacco pouch. The standing woman and girl are both wearing fringed dresses and large feather headdresses, the woman with elaborate jewelry including a long elk tooth necklace, bear claw necklace, and carrying a dagger in beaded sheath at her waist. The girl is wearing multiple necklaces including one that appears to be elk teeth and is carrying a small pouch suspended from her metal disc belt. The photograph was produced by Frank Wendt and is marked Photo. Artist. New York indicating it was produced between approximately 1893 and 1898. This is between the time Wendt took the studio over from his mentor Charles Eisenmann and assumed his clients, which included sideshow acts from P. T. Barnum. These Native American Indians may have been part of the Lakota Sioux or other Northern Plains tribes brought in by Barnum to be part of the Indian Life or Indian Band shows he developed as another facet of his sideshow or circus freak business. BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST SHOW PORTRAITStamped on the back "Goplo 55. Avenue Des Ternes, 55 Paris". 3/4 seated portrait of a young Native American Indian man seated in a chair, wearing a feather headdress with beaded band, long hair showing underneath, a bone bead breastplate over a shirt with fringe and holding a bow and arrows. The Show Indians hired by William Cody participated in wildly popular performances at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889. Lively performances showcasing equestrian skills with bow and arrows, attackson settlers, stagecoaches, pony express riders, and wagon trains, reenactments of the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Death of George Armstrong Custer, and the Wounded Knee Massacre led to this show averaging around 30,000 spectators per day while the Eiffel Tower averaged 12,000 visitors per day.
