George Moutard Woodward (British,
George Moutard Woodward (British, 1760-1809) "English Pot Luck or The Frenchman's Mistake", graphite and watercolor, signed and inscribed lower left "Woodward delin", sight 9-1/4" x 13". Glazed, handsomely matted and presented in a giltwood frame. An amateur watercolorist and caricaturist, George Moutard Woodward arrived in London in 1792. From around 1794-1807 he drew numerous caricatures mainly engraved by Isaac Cruikshank and by his friend and drinking companion, Thomas Rowlandson. Known as "Mustard" George, Woodward was well known for his social satires of "General Discontent" and is often credited with the invention of the modern comic strip. He was reputed to have lived a dissolute life and died in a London tavern in 1809.

NEWS OF AMERICAN UNREST IN THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE WITH SUPPLEMENT (London, 1774), considerable space is given to an "Account of the Rise of Ill-Humour in America," which describes meetings being held throughout the colonies regarding taxes, loyalties, and tea. A Rhode Island paper goes so far as to encourage the colonies to unite against the British with the slogan "Join or Die!" The "Supplement to the Gentleman's Magazine: for the Year 1774" reviews Edmund Burke's speech in Parliament regarding American taxation and outlines the proceedings of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.
