Provenance: By descent through four generations of a Ukrainian family to the current owner. The original owner of these works was a Ukrainian member of the intellectual elite in pre-revolutionary Russia. During the Russian Revolution, he moved first to Istanbul and then Paris, where he settled in the early 1920s. He likely acquired these works while living in Paris. The paintings were bequeathed to his nephew, the grandfather of the current owner, who was a prominent scientist at Harvard.
