JOHN O. BANKS (UK, ACTIVE 1856-1873) "The Broken Jug", oil on canvas, signed lower left, label verso from Dawson Gallery of Annapolis, MD. A British country genre scene depicting two young mothers in 19th c. English landscape with a Tudor cottage behind. Their children are gathered around them at stream's edge as one young boy tries to piece together a pottery jug his brother broke. His sisters are disdainful or forgiving, the tension is broken by the dog begging for the baby's treat and the gossips in a nearby doorway. Housed in a gold acanthus leaf deep cove frame with dusty rose velvet liner, OS: 45 1/2" x 38", SS: 35 1/2" x 27 1/2", cleaned and relined, overall light craquelure, stretcher impression, spots lower right.
