William P. Gottlieb (American
William P. Gottlieb (American 1917-2006) "Billie Holiday" silver gelatin photograph signed lower left signed titled inscribed "#A" dated "c. 1945" and photographer's stamp en verso 20 in. x 16 in. attractively matted and framed. Note: In the 1930s the Brooklyn born Gottlieb was writing a weekly jazz column for the Washington Post. Informed by the newspaper that they would not fund a photographer to accompany him on his nightclub jaunts Gottlieb purchased an inexpensive camera and cajoled the Post's staff photographers into teaching him the rudiments of their craft. He went on to capture some of the most iconic images of Jazz musicians. Gottlieb credited the success of his images to his knowledge and understanding of the music itself; "I learned to shoot very carefully. I knew the music. I knew in advance when the right moment would arrive. It was purposeful shooting." This image of Billie Holiday is one of the singer's most recognizable and embodies the beauty and torment of her performance. Gottlieb had a deep appreciation and understanding of Holiday and he once wrote; "The haunting anguished voice of Billie Holiday...is one of the glories of music so I was fortunate to have heard her...when she was at her peak."
