FLINTLOCK SHOTGUN BY BARBAR OF LONDONEngland, circa 1770, the richly figured mahogany stock mounted with an engraved steel lock plate signed BARBAR (for James Barbar of London), engraved brass trigger guard, the frizzen is functional and the lock holds at 1/2 cock and will fire at full cock. The top of the 59 3/4" steel barrel stamped BARBAR, the left side bearing gunmaker proof marks & 'Viewed' proofhouse marks, retaining what appears to be its original ramrod affixed with a 'worm' for removing a stuck ball or powder load. Splits & early repairs to the stock. Untested. Overall length 75 3/4" long, barrel length 59 3/4". Together with an assocaite poweder horn, 14 1/2" long. Note: James Barbar was the son of noted London gunmaker Lewis Barbar. He received his Freeman papers in 1722, and was later appointed as Gentleman Armourer to George II in 1741 at Hampton Court. He operated as a private gunmaker from 1726-67. He died in 1773.
