Thaddeus Stevens Abolitionist Congressman Autographed CDV Plus Lot of 5 featuring a cdv portrait of Thaddeus Stevens autographed along bottom edge of albumen with Mathew Brady's Washington D.C. backmark plus the verso inscription: The chair with the red seat belonged to his mother. She sold some things to pay for her sons tuition at college / Thaddeus Stevens. Also included is a cdv titled Managers of the House of Representatives of the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson with Stevens seated in the front row second from left with Brady's backmark; plus a cdv of General Benjamin Butler with Brady's backmark. Butler was also one of the Representatives involved in Johnson's impeachment.The cdvs are accompanied by a 3 x 5 in. card signed Thaddeus Stevens / Penn. which was once removed from a Civil War-era autograph album; and Memorial Addresses on the Life and Character of Thaddeus Stevens Delivered in the House of Representatives Washington D.C. December 17 1868. Washington: Government Printing Office 1869. 8vo cloth-covered boards 84pp.Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868) was a leader of the Radical Republicans before during and after the Civil War. Stevens was a firebrand abolitionist who was an active member of the Underground Railroad and devoted most of his energies in opposing the expansion and even the continuation of slavery in America. Condition: Light even toning to cdvs and signed card. Some wear to books covers; previous owners notes inside book.

Condition: Toning one small tear at margin.
