He spent two years in Internal Medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at Harvard University and completed his Doctorate in Philosophy at Christ Church Oxford. Ultimately Dr. Downey became the Simon Baruch Professor and Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. In addition to his time in England, Dr Downey also traveled extensively throughout India and was a visiting professor of Physiology at Australia's University of Adelaide.
