JACKSONVILLE CABINET PHOTO
JACKSONVILLE CABINET PHOTO RIVERBOAT CAPTAINCharles Edward Garner moved to Florida from Ohio in the early 1880s. He quickly founded a Steamship Line. His ship the Port Royal carried traffic mostly on the lower St. Johns river. He is still shown as owning a steamer line in 1898. Around the turn of the century he left the water, apparently a successful businessman, and by 1902 he was President of the Florida National Bank in Jacksonville His bank issued $5 notes at that time, signed by him. This cabinet photo is in fine condition, and was taken by S. P. (Samuel Peter) Burgert at Burgert's studio in Jax. His name is at the bottom of the photo mounting card. This is the same Burgert who then went to the Tampa Bay area setting up a huge studio run by his family, taking thousands of early photos of the area.

SANFORD STEAMSHIP PHOTOGRAPHAntique
SANFORD STEAMSHIP PHOTOGRAPHAntique original photo print 7.5" x 4.5" mounted on cardboard of the steamship (side-wheeler) "City of Jacksonville" at dock in Sanford, Florida, probably on Lake Monroe. This steamer traveled up and down the St. Johns River (which goes into Lake Monroe) and other rivers as well as into the Atlantic. It was built in 1882 was was still in service well into the 1900s. The caption on the photo mentions water hyacinths, and a mass of them extends for hundreds of feet along the pier in this very sharp and detailed photo print. These are considered noxious weeds and clog many Florida rivers and lakes. The back of the photo has an ad from the photographer, Emsinger Bros. who were in Sanford. They specializd in "Views of South Florida Scenery" and had a fine list of "War Views," presumably the Civil War. The print has a crack and fold line entering from the right side near the bottom and extending about 3" through the water hyacinths. Otherwise fine and quite clean.

1836 GEORGIA LETTER RE INDIAN WARS,
1836 GEORGIA LETTER RE INDIAN WARS, GEN JESUPLetter dated September 17, 1836, regarding a Florida land deal. Writer is communicating presumably with would-be investors or other interested parties about "a band of 3000 acres of the best land on the St. John's River, as navigation is all-important." He goes on to describe the challenge presented by the Indian Wars, but says that "a very strong army will be sent against them next month with Genl. Jesup at their head ... now he may drive them out of the country or force them to a compliance ... of some shape." Indeed, General Jesup's solution involved controversially capturing chiefs Osceola and Micanopy under a false flag of truce after each had agreed to sign a peace treaty. Letter is faintly postmarked and measures 10" x 7-3/4".
