WILLIAM HENRY YATES (AMERICAN. 1845-1934) PAINTINGPortrait of a Young Boy, 1897. Signed, dated l/l. Oil on Canvas. 40 by 30 in., overall 52 by 39 in. (Cond: some areas of paint thinning, losses to gilt frame) Cf. William H. Yates was born in Schenectady, NY in 1845, where he painted local views, sweeping western panoramas, scenes of New York City and Civil War battle scenes. Yates enlisted in the 124th Infantry known as “The Orange Blossoms” during the Civil War and saw action in about twelve battles. Soon after his return to NY Yates painted the Battle of Gettysburg, which was later bought by the 1881 Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and presented to the Soldiers' Home in Bath, New York. Two of his best-known works, are the New York Central Railroad, 1883 and the Dam on the Owasco Outlet with the Auburn Woolen Mill Factory complex, 1871, both of which are now housed at the Cayuga Museum and Historical Society.
