Poster for the Moratorium , 1969
Offset lithograph, hand signed and copyright "Jasper Johns 1969" lower right, edition 142/300
The American flag in camouflaged, black, and salmon with a white bullet hole, unframed, the poster commissioned of the veteran Johns to commemorate the anti-war Moratorium Marches that occurred in the fall of 1969 throughout the US. This work is regarded as one of the most captivating and powerful images of the anti-Vietnam War movement.
Johns has created over forty works based on the US flag, the first of which conceived in 1954 from a dream the artist had at 24, two years after his honorable discharge from the US Army. His 48-star Flag of 1958 was purchased in 2010 by hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen for an estimated $110 million, making it the most expensive work sold by a living artist as of 2023.
Plate: 17 1/8 x 26 1/8 in. (43.5 x 66.4 cm.), sheet: 20 5/8 x 28 5/8 in. (52.4 x 72.7 cm.)
