Housed in what is probably the original lemon gold cove frame, OS: 25 1/2" x 21", SS: 21" x 17 1/2", losses to background, only one small flake to his forehead.

REVERSE PAINTED MIRROR. Possibly made by Benjamin Morrill Boscawen Merrimack County New Hampshire ca.1820-1830 wood and glass. Black and gold painted split spindle mirror with eglomise plate. Rectangular frame with applied split spindles with ring turnings joined by corner blocks. Upper plate eglomise with wide swags centering a barefoot girl holding a cat. Found in a New Hampshire home. 22 1/4''h. 11 3/4''w. Ex Bob Jessen and Jim Hohnwald (New Hampshire). There is some paint loss. The mirror is newer. The backboard is split in two and taped back together and glued down.

Note: These portraits are after a well-known pair painted by James Sharples in 1798. Sharples (1751-1811) was an English artist who lived between America and England in the late 18th to early 19th century, residing in both Philadelphia and New York. During this period, he achieved his goal of painting George Washington after his return to private life. The long-standing admiration of George and Martha Washington as public figures led to the continued popularity of these silhouettes.
