JOHNSTON, ORDERS, 4TH PA BATTALION, 1776 Francis Johnston (1748-1815, founder with Anthony Wayne of the 4th PA Battalion, later the 5th PA Regt.) autograph orders, signed in 3rd person, Chester, Sunday, March 3, 1776; 1/2 p. folio. Removes the Sergeant of the Guard and other guards from duty for allowing a prisoner to accompany them to buy rum the night before; the whole battalion to muster on the parade grounds that morning and afternoon; the commanding officers to update the rolls, mentioning a similar order by Anthony Wayne. The unit had begun to gather at Chester on February 9, less than a month before, and there were clearly problems with discipline. The unit would go on to play a prominent role in the Continental army, including Ft. Ticonderoga, Paoli, and Yorktown.

Regiment) autograph letter, signed, dated at camp, Bottom's Bridge (on the Chickahominy River, in New Kent Co., east of Richmond), August 12, 1781, to Gen. Anthony Wayne and docketed in his handwriting; 1 p., folio, 13 3/8 x 8 1/4 in.; offering Wayne his resignation. The Pennsylvania troops had suffered considerably over the previous few weeks for lack of supplies and in skirmishes with the British, resulting in the condensing three battalions into two, with extraneous officers sent home to recruit. In fact, Milligan remained in service until mid 1783.
