John Wesley Hardrick (American,
John Wesley Hardrick (American, 1891-1968), "Overlook at Beanblossom", oil on board; 23 1/2" x 29 1/2"; unsigned. Brass plaque on frame. Hardrick was an important African-American painter from Indianapolis. He studied at the Herron Art Institute and exhibited with fellow African-American painter, W.E. Scott in 1917. He also shared a studio with Hale Woodruff for a time in the 1920's. He worked as a WPA muralist in 1933-34.

BATTLE OF NASHVILLE DEC 15 1864 UNION OFFICER LETTWritten by "Henry", thought to be Henry C. Grant First Officer, Second Division, Army of the Cumberland, to his sister Fannie, December 15 1864. Written the day of the Battle of Nashville the letter describes Confederate General John Bell Hood taking on the Federal forces led by Major General George H. Thomas. Henry says of the battle on December 15 "I never saw Yanks run as the Johnnies did to day." He goes on to talk about the battle, saying"...it was a grand but terrible sight...Hoods ary is badly demoralized..." He also touches on the living conditions in Nashville that winter, talking about the high cost of food and asking for provisions. Written on a single sheet of paper folded in half and folded to fit in an envelope. Overallapprox. 15" L x 9-3/4" H. Discoloration typical for age, multiple folds. See images for detail. 1863 CONFEDERATE TRAVEL PASS
1863 CONFEDERATE TRAVEL PASS [HOOD'S BRIGADE]Travel pass dated October 6, 1863, permitting Dr. William S. Boyd (see lot #159) a visit to a named person (illegible) "upon honor not to communicate, in writing or verbally, for publication, any fact ascertained which, if known to the enemy, mightbe injurious to the Confederate States of America." Signed by lieutenant provost marshal D.H. Hamilton, who could have been David Henry Hamilton of Hood's Brigade out of Texas (who served in the southeastern states during the war). That D.H. Hamilton was the great-great grandfather of former Texas governor Rick Perry. Document measures about 3" x 6-1/4". This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collection of American historicaldocuments from 1650 through WWII. The estate collection, assembled from about 1920-1960, has never been offered for sale at auction. See images. This item can be shipped in-house.

John Hoyland (RA) was regarded as one of Britain's leading abstract painters, one of the most inventive and dynamic abstract painters of the post-war period. Over the span of more than a half-century his art and attitudes constantly evolved. Hoyland was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991 and was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools in 1999.
