Carpenter worked as the photographer for Chicago's Field Museum between 1899 and 1947.

Carpenter was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1882, but swiftly relocated to St. Louis and entered Washington University’s School of Fine Arts in 1900. He spent the summer of 1902 in Paris, then worked as a guide to the St. Louis World’s Fair’s art exhibition, before becoming a faculty member at his alma mater. He would remain there until 1952.
Stretcher: 26 x 35 in. (66 x 88.9 cm.), frame: 31 1/2 x 41 in. (80 x 104.1 cm.)
