- KLATT BROTHERS CIRCUSA unique and important
KLATT BROTHERS CIRCUSA unique and important folk art circus "train" complete with exotic animals, wagon drivers, and painted circus wagons with hitched horse teams. The animals are carved with dignity and grace, and painted in dry colours while the wagons are detailed with ladders, scalloped sides, wire bars and decorated with scrolled pin striping. The Klatt Bros. Circus was carved and built by Hubert Klatt (1917-1997) and Joe Klatt (1913-2003) of Pembroke, Ontario when they were teenagers. Upon completion of the circus the industrious brothers took it to Callander, Ontario, where the Dionne quintuplets were attracting large crowds, and charged 25 cents to view their circus. Later, Hubert continued a carving career based in Pembroke while Joe took on various janitorial jobs in the area while carving for his own enjoyment. The wagons and animals offered were acquired at auction from the Estate of Joe Klatt and subsequently displayed in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Pembroke Museum. The Klatt Brothers Circus is also partially illustrated in Canadian Folk Art to 1950 by John Fleming and Michael Rowan, page 274.
