An American Renaissance Inlaid and Burled Walnut Parlor Suite mid-19th c. attributed to John Jelliff Newark comprising a sofa two armchairs and four side chairs; serpentine sofa with flared padded back cresting in an urn inlaid cartouche pendant ears shaped seat rail trumpet shaped legs casters; conforming chairs upholstered in indigo silk damask sofa height 43 1/2 in. width 78 in. depth 29 in. Note: The crest rail stile terminals and arm supports in this suite are closely related to those on a rosewood sofa side chair and armchair conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 68.133.1-4). The distinctive seat shape of this sofa with ends canted toward each other to accommodate a conversational group relates to other sofas attributed to Jelliff that were sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 141 May 3 2008; and lot 529 February 6 1999. Parlor furniture attributed to Jelliff with crests identical to those in this lot and offered in these rooms include lot 894 April 4 1999; lot 654 February 11 1993; and lot 436 October 31 1987.
