THE DAUGHTERS OF LOT, GENESIS XIX, VS. 30-32 Inscribed ‘GENESIS XIX’ and dating from c.1605-1627, oil on oak panel51.5cm x 124.5cm (20.25in x 49in)Provenance: Property from the Estate of the Late Lord David Douglas-HamiltonOn loan to John Knox HouseDean House Edinburgh until circa1845Note: This panel is believed to have been painted in the early 17th century for Dean House, Edinburgh. The House was demolished in 1845 to make way for Dean Cemetery. The National Museum of Scotland hold seven panels from Dean House in the C. K. Sharpe Collection, each depicting various Biblical scenes. One further panel is still on display at John Knox House. Stylistic affinities between the panel paintings, particularly apparent in the handling of the figures' heads and bodies, would suggest that they were produced by the same hand(s). This panel is thought to have been bought at auction in Edinburgh in the latter part of the 20th century. How it was separated from the others now in the NMS is unknown.Literature: Michael Bath, Renaisance Decorative Painting in Scotland (Edinburgh, NMSE, 2003), pp. 241-2M. R. Apted, Painted Ceilings of Scotland (Edinburgh, HMSO, 1966), plates 46-48 of others from Dean House
