John Johnston Inglis (American/Irish, 1867-1946)
John Johnston Inglis was born on August 26th, 1867 in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at the Dublin Academy then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome. At the Academie Colorossi his teachers were Raphael Collin and Gustave Courtois. Inglis began his painting career on his return to London in 1889. He exhibited at the London Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Scottish Academy. His travels took him to Niagara Falls and Lockport, New York and in 1907 Inglis settled in Rochester, New York. Here he was active in the Rochester Art Club and served as president. He accepted a position at the School of Applied Arts at the Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute which became the second professional art school in Rochester. In 1923, Inglis was named a director of the Memorial Art Gallery. He also took on the job of restoring the extensive portrait collection owned by the Rochester Historical Society, a task he completed in 1927. After a long illness, Inglis died at his home in Rochester on September 2nd, 1946. He is best known for seasonal landscape and marine painting.

Original label on stretcher from William Macbeth Gallery, 450 Fifth Ave at 40th St, New York City. OS: 25 1/2" x 20", SS: 19" x 13 1/2". Cleaned, one tiny repaired puncture at bottom.
While working as an illustrator for Philadelphia publications, Sloan moved to NYC in 1904, became a member of the Socialist Party, helped to develop 'The Ash Can School' with his old PAFA Mentor Robert Henri.
