Clementine Hunter (American/Louisiana, 1886-1988) "River Baptism", 1952, oil on board, 13-3/4" x 19", retains label en verso "Grippi, Custom Framing, 344 East 59th Street, New York" and a newspaper clipping announcing the artist's death. Presented in a silver-leafed and ebonized frame. "River Baptism" was one of twenty Clementine Hunter paintings exhibited at The Saturday Gallery in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 17 through December 22, 1952. Noted New Orleans photographer Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) personally selected from Melrose Plantation the paintings considered to be the artist's first commercial exhibition. In 1951, Laughlin discovered Clementine on one of his trips photographing the Louisiana "back country". "River Baptism" has remained in the personal collection of Mr. Armand Winfield, the gallery owner.
