He was an African American Civil Rights Leader and a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) , serving as its Chairman from 1963-1966. As Chairman, Lewis was among the 'Big Six' leaders of prominent civil rights organizations who organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. On March 7, 1965, he helped organize and lead the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This protest led to the incident that would become known as 'Bloody Sunday'. In 1968 Martin Luther King Jr, as leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), organized this protest. The protest consisted of thousands of people, setting up a camp on the Washington Mall over the course of six weeks. The Poor People's Campaign was motivated by a desire for economic justice and was endorsed by SNCC and many other civil rights organizations. Dimensions: Unframed, Sheet Size: 22 3/4 x 14 1/4 in.
