William E. Williams (American, 1818-1897) Folk art painting. Williams executed a number of watercolors as a teen in 1833 living in Wrightstown, Bucks Co., Pa. He died without heirs in 1897. This naive depiction shows two well armed, engaged combatants. Image: 4 7/8" x 7". Good condition. These paintings were acquired from a descendant. There was an accompanying journal from the time describing Williams's activities and current events. It also makes mention of his later years as a gentleman farmer and his association with the Cadwalladers, a well known Revolutionary family.

John Wesley Hardrick (American,
John Wesley Hardrick (American, 1891-1968), wooded landscape; oil on board; 38" x 41 1/2"; unsigned. Hardrick was a highly important African-American painter from Indianapolis. He studied at the John Herron Art Institute and exhibited at the 10th Annual Exhibition of Works by Indiana Artists in 1917 with fellow African-American painter, W.E. Scott. He shared a studio with Hale Woodruff for a time in the 1920's and exhibited with him in 1927 at the Art Institute of Chicago. He also was included in the Second Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Negro Art in San Diego (1929). He was awarded grants from the Harmon Foundation and worked as a WPA muralist in 1933-34.

Painted in 1916, the year of his death, near Warburton, Victoria." Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century.
