Early U.S. canteen, round with hand-planed wood and cut nail construction, one side stenciled "U.S." in red, other side with two sets of initials "L+V" and "J.R.", with wooden plug and leather strap, said to be from the War of 1812, 7-1/8 in., 8-1/2 in. with plug. Retains most of its original surface, several small worm holes, some of leather carrying strap later replacement, chips and losses to border.

KENTUCKY DOVETAILED HEART-HANDLE CUTLERY TRAY & MINIATU...1st item: Kentucky dovetailed walnut cutlery tray bisected by divider with heart-shaped cut out handle. Poplar bottom board. 8 5/8" H x 14 3/4" W x 9 1/4" D. 2nd item: Kentucky mixed woods miniature ladder back chair with plain round back posts having tapered finials, slightly arched slats over a rush woven seat, posts with plain armrests having tapered feet, and plain stretchers. 13 7/8" H x 7 3/4" W x 6 1/8" D. Both items 19th century. Provenance: From the collection of Patsey Field Harney Madden, a direct descendent of the founding families of Richmond and Madison County in Kentucky, including the families Estill, Miller, Field, Hume, and Burnham. On Patsey's mother's side was Captain James Estill, an original settler of Fort Boonesborough along with Daniel Boone. She was also a direct descendant of Colonel John Miller, who was originally from Richmond, VA and a Revolutionary War veteran. During the late 1700s, he donated the land where present day Richmond, Kentucky is now seated, and began his family. The Miller's and Estill families were eventually joined in marriage. The items from this collection descended in the family, and resided in the historic Miller Manor in Richmond, KY. It was constructed in 1862 by Robert Miller, grandson of Col. John Miller and great-great-grandfather to Patsey.
Condition:
Cutlery tray with minor scattered surface wear; three minor areas of warping to each side of divider and lower edge of one side. Miniature chair having one foot with minute losses, scattered minor errant marks to seat, and scattered minor splits to woven rush sheet.
