Chief Joseph Autograph In top marginChief Joseph Autograph In top margin of lined paper with typed note about Joseph. Framed with copy photograph of Joseph with a Carlisle student Stephen Reuben and Peo-peo-talaket. Many Native Americans in the late 19th century learned to write their names and even read a bit often in their later years once they were confined to reservations. Joseph the Elder converted to Christianity about mid-century and Joseph was educated by missionaries as a child. That education was short-lived as the missionaries were soon asked to leave the Walla Walla Valley. According to the note this autograph was signed at the home of Mr. John Hyde on one of Joseph's visits to Washington DC probably in 1904. Condition: Pencil corrections to text but paper is fine.
