EDITH PARSONS BRONZE SCULPTURE,"JOY"Edith Barretto Parsons (American, 1878-1956) bronze sculpture titled 'Joy" depicting a nude woman laughing and playfully holding a young child, also nude, in her outstretched arms; both are standing on a rocky base. Signed on base E. B. Parsons. 17"H x 4"W x 8"D. Biography (courtesy Askart, The Artists Blue Book): Born in Halifax, Virginia, Edith Parsons studied at the Art Students League in New York with John Twachtman, Daniel Chester French, and George Bernard. Her specialty was memorial fountains including ones in John Galloway Public Park in Memphis, Tennessee, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Summit, New Jersey. She also did several portrait busts and animal figures. From 1908 to 1933, she exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design. Provenance: The living estate of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin H. Condition:
Verdigris patina, likely from previous outdoor exposure; 3 small white spots indicating possible corrosion, one on the child's nose, and two on the side of the base (up to 1/4") .

SISTER MARY CORITA KENT, 1918-1986, JOY TO THE WORLDSister Mary Corita Kent, 1918-1986 Joy to the World, serigraph pencil signed lower right serigraph Dimensions: 23 x 23 in. (58.4 x 58.4 cm.) Provenance: Corita Kent, born in 1918 in Iowa, was an American nun known by the name of Sister Mary Corita. She joined the Immaculate Heart of Mary as a teenager and eventually going on to head the art department at Immaculate Heart College. Often screenprinting her works, Corita Kent's posters and serigraphs combined watercolor paintings with printed pieces. While her early works were often religious in nature, she became a dedicated activist for social justice in the 1960s, and her later work is more political, focusing on subjects like war and poverty.Corita Kent's prints continued to evolve after she left the order in 1968 and took on a more secular and commercial design as she accepted more outside commissions. After battling cancer for many years, she passed away in 1986. Corita Kent's prints are prolific in number yet highly collectible.
