Margaret Keelan (1948 Canada/USA)
Margaret Keelan (1948 Canada/USA) Cheek to Cheek 2011Ceramic; ht. 19 wd. 9.5 dp. 7 in.Keelan plays exquisitely with clay's mimetic possibilities when it emerges from the kiln it seems to owe more to wood than ceramics. The artist herself states "My sculptures have been glazed stained fired then glazed stained and fired again to give the surfaces the look of disintegrating paint over weathered wood. This softening and reduction of form so that its essential nature is revealed is a metaphor I am using for life being lived my exploration of the process of growing up and growing older." Although the artist's figures echo contemporary concerns the borrowing of earlier styles "gives them more of an ageless quality." The mixture on nostalgia and incongruity becomes a heady mixture in her hands.References: Schwartz Judith. Confrontational Ceramics. University of Pennsylvania Press 2009. Private Collection. Acquired directly from the Artist.
