  WINOLD REISS (1886-1953) YELLOW KIDNEYFeatured in this lot is this framed Winold Reiss piece on board depicting " Yellow Kidney," by German American artist Winold Reiss born in 1886 and died in 1953. The artwork features a wonderfully and professionally crafted image on board construction that shows chief Yellow Kidney clothed in a trade blanket with a dancing wand with ceremonial garments underneath the trade blanket. The artwork comes with information pertaining to Winold Reiss's operation and the object of this piece of artwork. The artist signature is shown in the bottom right hand corner. Artist Winold Reiss was born on September 16, 1886, in Karlsruhe, Germany. A gifted portraitist, Reiss challenged the convention of racial stereotyping by portraying African American, Native American, and Asian American subjects as dignified individuals. The condition of this of this print shows well preserved stature with some wear to the back of the pastel but otherwise shows no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this framed piece is 22 3/8" x 16 1/4" and the visible artwork measures 19" x 12 5/8".

  Exceptionally Fine Chinese Carved Nephrite Jade Water Dropper, 18th century, a superb example of an item for a scholar's desk, carved as two hollowed lotus seed pods enfolded within a curved lotus leaf, each seed pod topped with a figure of a rat, the tail of one passing through a hole in the edge of the lotus leaf, the stone of yellow and brown tones, the carver using the darker areas for the lotus leaf and for the body of one of the rats, l. 3-1/2". The quality of carving, ingenious use of color of the natural stone and the rebus (word puzzle created by syllabic sounds) make this a piece of high artistic and creative merit.
