IMPORTANT 16TH C. HELMET, KING
IMPORTANT 16TH C. HELMET, KING HENRY VIIIA historically important close helmet, the one piece skull showing a low comb with roped detail, upper visor with eye-slot, plain lower visor and chin guard with roped detail, restoration to lower visor & comb. English, circa 1550. Measuring, 11" high. Provenance: Sotheby's Catalogue dated April 6th 1976, London, page 12, Lot #87 (photos of Sotheby's catalogue included), referencing this helmet as belonging to Sir William Goring, Knight of Burton Sussex, Master of the Horse to King Henry VIII, and Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Edward VI, thence to the Family of Goring of Highden, Sussex and by family descent to the present owner. Note: There is definite evidence that he was killed in the helmet as it underwent hasty repairs so that it could be affixed to a wall behind his tomb. A sword cut does not line up with any corresponding cut in the crudely made bevor so the latter was fashioned after his death. The helmet has remained in the Goring family until it was decided to place it in the hands of Sotheby's auction firm who sold it in 1976 to the present owner.
