A DUTCH DECORATED KAKIEMON DISH c.1710-20, the centre painted with the "Hob in the Well" design within a dense floral border, 21.5cm diameter Provenance: Bt. Vincent L'Herrou, Ceramics Fair, June 2002. This celebrated pattern derives from the Chinese story of the 11th century Statesman Sima Guang (Jp. Shiba Onko), illustrating lateral thinking and presence of mind. When as a boy, his friend fell into a giant water-jar and as Guang was not strong enough to pull him out, he took a large stone and smashed the jar.
