KPM FIGURAL PORCELAIN CANE-Ca
KPM FIGURAL PORCELAIN CANE-Ca 1850 -Large porcelain KPM Berlin (Royal Porcelain Manufacture) handle modeled in an asymmetrically bent, early Baroque shape and adorned by the head of a woman. -Freestanding at the front, the head comes with a frill collar and tiny bonnet with ribbons over a “Tête de Mouton” or “Sheep’s Head” hairstyle with defined twists of curls arranged in rows across the front and each side of the head. The coiffure builds a frame for a round face covered in greater part with a lace veil and still shows pouting lips and mercury pastes white complexions with pink patches, conforming to 18th century ladyship ideals of beauty. -The voluminous body of the handle is modeled in shallow relief with scrolls and shells all highlighted with plenty of blooms and a wealth of rich gold moriage to surround a genre scene with two courting couples in an idyllic garden landscape. -The portraiture is breathtaking, executed in micro detail down to single strings of the veil and in superb and vivid colors. -This landmark porcelain handle was modeled by Friedrich Elias Meyer for KPM around 1760 and is recorded to have been produced over 150 years. Notable is that the older examples, like this particular one, were the largest and with sharper modeling detail. -From earth to fire, this fragile legacy brilliantly survived the test of time intact and with its entire sparkle. Indeed, the handle reflects all the seductive powers of the vitrified material and representative for a period when porcelain was reserved to the very few. It comes with a well-chased metal collar on a high-grade malacca shaft with pronounced ridge and an iron ferrule. -Loaded with the essential mix of quality, rarity, aesthetic appeal this cane is porcelain art at its best and has the crossover appeal of associating with more than one collecting field to augment its value and increase its desirability. -H. 4 ½” x 3 ¾”, O.L. 35 ¾” -$1,800-$2,500 -The white gold of the KPM, Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, has been made in Berlin for the last 250 years. Friedrich the Great christened the Royal Porcelain Manufacturers in the year 1763 and gave it the famous blue scepter as a trademark. From this time onwards, the name KPM has stood for the most perfectly crafted, highest-quality porcelain and became great fame for its splendid modeling and colorful decoration. -Friedrich Elias Meyer Sen. (* around 1723 in Erfurt; † October 2, 1785 in Berlin), was a German sculptor and porcelain modeler in the Rococo period. He created numerous models for the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, but came to fame when he became head of the art department at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin.
