The second an unusually dynamic composition with samurai engaged in battle superimposed over a large partial image of a seated Buddha in a meditation posture signed Toyokuni ga. A LARGE INDIAN CARVED BLACK STONE KRISHNA SCULPTURE 20th century, the youthful Krishna is depicted as a cowherd playing the flute, the lure of his music was irresistible to his female admirers, the gopis, who symbolize the human soul, his large eyes are painted white with black pupils, he wears a necklace, armbands, earrings, rings, and an elaborate cap, dressed in dhoti cloth pants highlighted in gilt, red paint remains to his hands, mouth, and around his eyes possibly from ritual use, raised on a square base with low relief gilt scrolling pattern.

16TH C. INDIAN BRONZE STATUE - MAHISHASURAMARDINICentral Asia, India, ca. late 16th to early 17th century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze statuette of Mahishasuramardini in a striking pose. He stands on an integral tiered rectangular platform with his eight outstretched arms holding their own individual attributes. His visage stares outwards, seemingly indifferent to the current predicament taking place directly below him. His right leg is bent and stepping on the back of Yali, a mythical amalgam chimera comprised of parts from a horse, elephant, and a lion. In front of his left leg is a demon being slain by the Trishula (or Trident of Shiva). With its rich iconography and fantastic dark-green patina, this is a fabulous depiction of the Mahishasuramardini! Size: 4" H (10.2 cm).
