JOHN WOLLASTON (BRITISH, 1710 -
JOHN WOLLASTON (BRITISH, 1710 - 1775) image 29 ½" x 24 ¼" Maria Burke. Oil on canvas, half length portrait, no signature visible, in original carved wood gilt over gesso ornate fame, overall 37" x 32 ¼". Provenance: commissioned by Richard Burke (father of the sitter and seventh generation great-grandfather of the current owner) in ca. 1750 to John Wollaston, who painted it in New York. Provenance: Held in the family collection since its creation; in the family tradition, the painting was stabbed by British soldier during the Revolutionary War; it was on custodial loan in The Smithsonian Institution in 1970's and later returned to the family.
The portrait is included in the official Phelps-Marshall Kinship genealogical book and specified commission to John Wollaston (p.140), by Nancy Sheppard McBride (maternal grandmother of the current owner), McClure Press, 1977 (book is not included in the lot).
