Diane Corisande de Andoins Mistress
Diane Corisande de Andoins Mistress of Henri IV DS Diane d'Andoins (1554-1621) who preferred to be called Corisande (and was usually referred to as La Belle Corisande) apparently from a fictional romantic figure became the mistress of Henri of Navarre who became Henri IV the first Bourbon king of France. DS 2pp 9 x 12.5 in. 1606. Signed Corisane Demdoyns. Diane was accused of trying to get Henry to repudicate his wife Marguerite (who was the youngest daughter of Catherine d'Medici) so she could become his legitimate spouse. Marguerite for her part attempted to poison Henry then shot at him (and missed). During the Renaissance mistresses could have real power and reportedly Diane did. They could appoint ministers make laws etc. Condition: Light even toning surface soil and scuffing along edges. A few pencil notations by later cataloguers. Mounted on light cardstock docketing on last page visible.

French Bronze Figure of the
French Bronze Figure of the "Diana of Versailles", fourth quarter 19th century, after the antique traditionally attributed to Leochares, ca. 325 B.C., the dark brown-patinated figure with gilt quiver, h. 14-3/4". Provenance: Private collection, Sarasota, Florida. The first or second century Roman copy of the Greek "Diane Chasseresse", as it is also known, was given by Pope Paul IV to Henry II in the late 1550's (with the not-so-subtle allusion to Henry's mistress, Diane de Poitiers). Originally displayed at Fontainebleau, it was moved to the Louvre in 1602. Louis XV installed the statue in the Grande Gallerie of Versailles, but it was returned to the Louvre in 1798, where it remains today.
