19TH C. MEXICAN EX-VOTO RETABLO,
19TH C. MEXICAN EX-VOTO RETABLO, SENORA DE LOURDESLatin America, Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. Hand-painted on a sheet of tin-coated iron, a beautiful ex-voto depicting Saint Bernadette witnessing a vision of the Virgin Mary near the French village of Lourdes, all rendered in impeccable detail. Mary is shown wearing long white robes and a blue sash, as described by Bernadette when she told of the apparition. She appears amongst the rocky craigs of a grotto with an altar built around her and the village of Lourdes shown in the distance. Her hands are clasped in prayer, and from them hangs a long rosary. The girl Bernadette kneels before the Virgin, as another girl - perhaps Bernadette's sister - also genuflects behind her. Liberal remains of an inscription are featured in the upper margin. A lovely tableau! Size: 8.6" W x 6.5" H (21.8 cm x 16.5 cm)
Provenance: ex-Austin, Texas, USA collection; ex-private Alabama, USA collection
