The shaped circular plate inscribed La Fayette 1793 above a portrait of Lafayette, within a stylized border of a blossoming vine. Diameter 9.75 in. (Cond: good) The significance of the 1793 date is most likely a reference to first year of Lafayette’s imprisonment in Prussia during the French Revolution.

Copper engraving on wove paper, housed in 19th c. cross banded mahogany panel frame with stringing, French-ruled gilt lined mats, under modern UV glass. OS: 24 1/4" x 18 1/2", sheet size: 18 3/4" x 13". Minor staining, edge loss, appears to be laid down, minor frame loss.

Asa Park (Kentucky 1790-1827)
Asa Park (Kentucky 1790-1827) Portrait of Lafayette Kentucky Portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette ca 1824-1825 a half-portrait of Lafayette housed in an ornately carved gilt and gesso frame unsigned; 27.75 x 23 in. As the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approached President James Monroe invited Gilbert du Motier marquis de Lafayette to tour the United States and relight the fires of 1776. Lafayette General George Washington??Ts cherished comrade-in-arms left France on July 13 1824 and landed on Staten Island New York on August 15. During the next 15 months he was honored with great pomp and circumstance in all 24 states of the Federal Union. Aged veterans turned out in large numbers to cheer his progress especially in Kentucky where it was said that ?although a nobleman by descent he was a republican in principle and was more ennobled by nature than by all the titles of hereditary.?Lafayette??Ts visit to Kentucky was cause for celebration throughout the commonwealth. He had already been warmly greeted in Washington by Henry Clay then speaker of the House of Representatives. In that chamber to the right of the speaker??Ts rostrum Ary Scheffer??Ts full length portrait of Lafayette hung a present from the artist in 1823. Inspired by that gift the Kentucky State Legislature commissioned Matthew Harris Jouett to paint a full length replica which was then placed on the right side of the speaker??Ts rostrum in the Kentucky State House. The Scheffer portrait became the inspiration for numerous engraving??Ts of Lafayette??Ts likeness and is also the source for the portrait at hand. The most likely painter of this portrait is Asa Park (1800-1827). He first advertised himself in the Lexington Reporter November 10 1816 as being from ?Boston under the patronage of the celebrated Stuart and Penniman.? Penniman was a sign painter from whom Park learned the skills required to create the sharply linear facial contours and strongly contrasting color values seen here. From 1818 until 1826 Park kept various studios in Lexington notably the one listed in the 1818 city directory at Mulberry and Main. From this base he was active in Danville and other central Kentucky locations as an itinerant. He moved to Cincinnati in 1820 in response to the severe economic downturn in Kentucky??Ts economy. He returned to Lexington in 1823. Park was an active member of the Lexington Masonic Order charged with creating displays for Lafayette??Ts grand reception. The Kentucky Reporter for May 23 1825 notes that he painted an image of the ?spread eagle of the United States? whose ?execution is in a fine bold style.? It was placed in the principal room Lafayette visited where ?walls were ornamented with??|portraits??|contributed by our artists.? Lafayette had been made a Mason by George Washington the Grand Master Mason of America and many of the leading political and military figures of the day in Kentucky were Masons. What better tribute could be placed in a Masonic Hall than a compelling portrait of this type created by Park? Feted at the Masonic Hall Lafayette received a rapturous reception in Lexington. Mary Austin Holley wife of Transylvania University President Horace Holley composed an idyllic verse for him. ?Let the love of our country pervade every breast Till it wake every soul to intense emulation Already its children in gladness are met To raise the loud anthem to brave Lafayette.? In April of 1826 Park closed his studio in Lexington and died there in January of 1827. He was buried in the garden of his surrogate father Edward West on High Street with full Masonic honors. FRAMED 1824 LETTER FROM LAFAYETTE WITH ENGRAVED PORTRAIT OF THE SAME YEAR A translation into English from the original French: "Paris, 14 May, 1824. I quickly profit, my dear general, by the departure of Mr. Garcia del Rio, former Foreign Affairs Minister to Lima, now in charge of the Peruvian mission to London. You will have seen Mr. Rich: The information relative to his young compatriot has been transmitted to the parent of our lady friend. Before receiving it he has tried to get in touch with the Pylave, he had not been able to receive permission that the secret be lifted nor that the money be sent: obstinately goes on attributing to him the acts of his brother. Besides, our correspondent shows much zeal, though little trust in his means: but the explanations that he must have received his hopes by showing that he is not alone will raise, I think, to show he is not alone in the unjustly persecuted misfortu(nate).
You will have seen the Gal Torrijos too: he was gone and it was too late for his comrades too when one wanted to warn them of the little recourse he would find in England. The situation of the patriot prisoner, the constitutional prisoner and all of the friends of liberty in Europe is very sad at present. One need not be desperate. But the heart bleeds for those who suffer and endures for obtaining so little relief for them.
My daughter and my sister saw, as they passed, my dear general: they told you my projects for the United States. I do not know precisely when I shall leave yet: I can hardly believe you would arrive before me, nevertheless, I enclose a few letters in the hope of embracing you on this land of freedom. You know my feelings too well for me to try to express them, I give myself with all my heart to renewing my tender friendship."
Framed in gold box frame, together in two window mat, under glass, 16 1/2" x 20", 9 12" x 11" letter, folded and foxed, 8" x 5" stipple engraving.
Lafayette returned to the US on Aug 14, 1824, arriving at Staten Island.

FRAMED TICKET TO THE "LAFAYETTE BALL" MAY 16, 1825 AT HOTEL CINCINNATI FOR MISS M.A. MATSON Celebrating the Marquis de Lafayette, Revolutionary War Hero, who toured the new United States from August 1824 through Sept 1825.
May 8?9 ? Their steamboat Mechanic sinks on the Ohio River; all passengers reach shore safely, but Lafayette loses property and money; the party is picked up the following day by the passing steamboat Paragon. On May 19, 1825, Lafayette arrived at Covington from Lexington, Kentucky and attended a ball across the Ohio River at the Cincinnati Hotel on Front Street. May 19?20 ? Stayed in Cincinnati, Ohio. (The date is wrong on the ticket because of the delay resulting from the sinking.)

Note: Lafayette with the Battle of Yorktown to his left, his horse and his attendant James Armistead at his proper left side. Armistead was a slave who volunteered to serve with Lafayette and eventually became a spy for the Revolutionary cause. In light of these contributions, Lafayette actively supported James winning his freedom from the Virginia General Assembly in 1787.
