  GRAND TOUR BRONZE "LION OF LUCERNE" MEMORIAL STATUE The Lion Monument, or the Lion of Lucerne, (German: Löwendenkmal) is a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), and hewn in 1820-21 by Lukas Ahorn (1789-1856). It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. This large high-quality heavy patinated bronze was probably manufactured for wealthy Americans, is marked verso "Rev Susse Frs. Ed-is, Paris", with the inscription on the front as the original reading "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti MDCCXCII". 9 1/2" x 20" x 6"".
