  LIGHTHOUSE TORSION CLOCK Circa 1880. Eight-day time and strike with torsion pendulum, gilt-bronze and patinated brickwork case with the clock in the bottom and an oscillating multicolored glass balance mechanism above. The realistically modeled glazed cupola set with rotating red and green glass panels alternately revealing the helical torsion spring, enclosed by a balustrade over a tapering body with applied windows to a concave mid-section over a brickwork base with door containing the Roman dial and original blued steel spade hands. The single barrel movement with deadbeat escapement and pallet arm with a forked end impulsing the slowly rotating torsion pendulum above. Literature: An identical case is illustrated in Roberts, D. Chappell in gilt lettering and depicting two barbers in their shop; an example identified Edmond Grenier with a barber's chair; and one identified D. Williams depicting barber's tools. underside of Chappell mug marked D & Co., underside of Williams mug signed J. Ritter in gilt. Height of largest 3 7/8 inches. U.S. Federal Census returns from 1910 through 1930 record an Edmund Grenier (1881-1935) working as a barber in Herkimer, New York. Grenier was born to French-Canadian immigrants and married Josephine Blancett before 1910, and the couple had three children together. Massachusetts City Directories also list an Edmond Grenier (circa 1883-1956), variably recorded as Armand Grenier, working as a barber in Fall River during the 1920s and 1920s. Also of French-Canadian descent, Grenier wed Rose Beauregard on October 24, 1904, and they had at least three children together. Property from the Collection of James Carpenter, Montague, New Jersey
