LINCOLN CDV PORTRAIT WITH LETTER TO
LINCOLN CDV PORTRAIT WITH LETTER TO SENATOR RE: A REBEL POW AMNESTY & SIGNED RELEASE FROM LINCOLN, 1 MO BEFORE HIS ASSASINATION "Putnamville, Indiana, March 7th, 1865. Hon. Henry S. Lane, US Senator, I have the honor of receiving your favor of the 18th January. Please accept my sincere thanks for your prompt reply to my former letter in reference to the release of a nephew of mine, James S. Thompson, confined as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Ill. I have just received a duplicate of his application to take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States Government, which I enclose. You will perceive that he was conscripted in the Rebel army, and deserted at Jonesboro Georgia, surrendered to the 4th Army Corps that he might take the oath and he does not wish to be exchanged. He has been in Camp Douglas all winter, wrote me in Nov last, he was in a very destitute condition & sick, being unaccustomed to the rigor of a Northern climate, doubtless he has suffered greatly. I think he is a good Union man. His father lived in this place was an 'old school Whig' This young man is in very poor health, and if in your power, I respectfully request you to present this duplicate to His Excellency, President of the United States with my earnest (see verso) desire he may grant James W. Thomson's speedy release. Yours respectfully, Mrs. James E. Layman. "
The accompanying note is from Sen Lane to Lincoln: "To the President, I most earnestly recommend & request the release of Jas W. Thomas (sic) the herein named prisoner. H.S. Lane", Lincoln has responded on the same card "Let this man take the oath of Dec. 8, 1863, and be discharged. A. Lincoln. March 13, 1865".
