HADLEY CHEST, EARLY 18TH
HADLEY CHEST, EARLY 18TH CENTURY., ALSO KNOWN ASthe "Noble Chest". Joined frame construction and three-panel facade, over a side hung drawer. The sides are framed to contain two panels. White oak, with yellow pine secondary wood. Replaced pine lift top. Intricately carved and incised top rail, carved in top center, the initials TN. Three front panels with detailed carved and incised decoration, including vines, tulips, and hearts. The center panel features a quatrefoil design with a similar ornament above it. Further carved and incised sides and drawer, apron and feet. 33" high, 45" wide, 20 1/2" deep. Unique features include: the quatrefoil on the center panel, the wide stems on the side panels with heart ornaments, gouge marks on one side only of the leaf stems, and design on posts springing from chamfered edge. The piece shows wear consistent with age and use. Only the top compartment is original. The drawer, feet, and base were replaced in the early 20th c. Provenance: the chest is probably made for Thankful Noble, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Dewey Noble of Westhampton, MA, born May 31, 1714. Cousin to Mary Noble. The chest was found in Westhampton in 1920 with only its top compartment. It was restored from the 2nd rail down. It was purchased by Frederick W. Fuessenich, Torrington, CT. Purchased in Ashaway, RI, from Mrs. Andrews by the current owner. Found in Westfield, MA by Walter Carl. The chest is featured in the book "The Hadley Chest" by Clair Franklin Luther, published 1935, #62, page 103. Comes with a handwritten note from the book's author. These chests usually were made for young ladies as hope or blanket chests.
