A Laundryman's Porcelain
A Laundryman's Porcelain Occupational Shaving Mug Belonging to David Leff
Circa 1917
bearing the name and date Dave Leff / 1917 in gilt lettering, and depicting an engine-powered laundry truck reading Passaic Home Laundry.underside marked J&C Bavaria.Height 3 3/4 inches.
According to the genealogical record, David Leff (circa 1884-1937) was born around 1884 in Austria. He immigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century and settled in New York with his wife, Rose. The United States Federal Census of 1910 records that Leff worked as the proprietor of a laundry, and throughout the 1910s, frequent advertisements for Passaic Home Laundry appeared in the Passaic Daily News. On March 23, 1916, the paper reports that a Mrs. Rose Goldblack won a suit for $46 against the laundry company, claiming that her clothes became discolored upon their return. Further, on February 20, 1917, The Morning Call of Paterson County covered an incident involving a coal wagon, in which a team of horses belonging to the Passaic Home Laundry and driven by a George Leff, became frightened by a passing freight train and crashed into the wagon.
Perhaps in light of these incidents, David Leff's professional endeavors had shifted by 1920, by which time he was working as a jeweler. Leff died of coronary thrombosis on March 25, 1937,

The New York Condensed Milk Company was founded by inventor and entrepreneur Gail Borden in Wassaic, New York in 1861. The company changed its name to Borden Dairy in 1919 to honor its late founder, and the firm enjoyed remarkable growth during the 1920s, adding ice cream and cheese to its repertoire.

RARE MEISSEN ANTHROPOMORPHIC PART
RARE MEISSEN ANTHROPOMORPHIC PART TEA SERVICE
LATE 18TH CENTURY the cups and saucers of wrythen and basket weave moulded form; each piece painted to the centre with a humorous vignette of an animal engaged in various pursuits, such as a cat washing laundry, a fox carrying two baskets containing ducks and eggs, a kitten playing a lute to dancing mice etc.; all within a trellis border issuing sprays of flowers; with purple scale ground decoration to the gilt edged rims; comprising a teapot with matched cover, five saucers and three tea cups; underglaze blue crossed swords marks(8)teapot 11.5cm high, saucers 13.5cm diameter, cups 17cm highProvenance: Property of the late Mrs. Jean BogieThe anthropomorphic scenes on the porcelain in this group relates to a tradition of decoration inspired by characters in fables by writers such as Aesop and La Fontaine, which had been translated into prose by the 18th century in Germany and which would have circulated widely in educated society. The scenes were intended to point out the foibles of humanity and would have been humorous to an 18th century audience, who would have recognised the references to popular fables. The activities of the animals depicted are quite curious and specific and likely relate to a particular fable source. Anthropomorphic services created at Meissen are rare and few are in existence.

HELEN LAFRANCE O/C PANORAMIC
HELEN LAFRANCE O/C PANORAMIC FLOOD SCENE PAINTINGHelen La France (Kentucky, 1919-2020) oil on canvas (stretched on board) panoramic painting depicting muddy floodwaters sweeping away a house, tree limbs, and other various objects. The swollen river is surrounded by barren trees with a flat landscape and cloudy horizon beyond. Signed "Helen La France" lower right. Unframed. 24" H x 48" W. Biography: African American artist Helen LaFrance is best known for her "memory paintings," based on her 101 years of life in Graves County, Kentucky. Her parents, James Franklin Orr and Lillie May Ligon Orr, were tobacco farmers, and Helen spent most of her life no more than ten miles from her birthplace in Mayfield. Her mother taught her to draw and paint, helping her mix colors from wildflowers, berries, and laundry detergent, but she did not begin painting full time until her 40s, when she started selling her work at local art shows and fairs. Her subjects mostly focused on scenes of ordinary rural life, such as church picnics and river baptisms, although she occasionally portrayed dramatic events in the life of her community, such as tornadoes and floods, and African scenes inspired by her family's ancestral heritage. Lafrance's work (which also comprised quilts, wood carvings, and dolls) began attracting nationwide interest in the 1990s, and with a burgeoning market of collectors that included famous names such as Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King and Bryant Gumbel, she continued painting well into advanced age. In 2011 she received Kentucky's Folk Art Heritage Award. Her work recently became the subject of a retrospective at the Speed Museum in Louisville, and is also in the permanent collections of the St. Louis Art Museum and the Owensboro KY Museum of Fine Art.

Canvas has been stapled to a board backing. In very good condition with some spots of grime and a couple areas of scratching, largest 1" lower margin.
