From backgrounds in race-horse breeding and championship cattle ranching, the socialite couple paid homage to the St. Louis area community in a variety of ways.
Mr. Wallace served as Director of Commerce Bank, President of the St. Louis Zoo Friends Board, and was charitable to numerous organizations he believed in. Behind every great man is a better woman, and his wife Lee was renowned for being the glue of the family while she warmly served as Director of Development for local educational institutions and made an impact with her lasting spirit. LEE N. SMITH (AMERICAN B. 1950)LEE N. SMITH (AMERICAN B. 1950) A PAINTING, "MIGRATION ...LEE N. SMITH (American b. 1950) A PAINTING, "Migration 1956," 1982, oil on canvas, signed "Lee N. Smith III" verso. 48" x 63" Note: Migration 1956 captures the artist's family move from New Orleans to Dallas when the artist was 6 years old. Smith and his brother ride wearily in the back seat as the apparition of their never born sister looks down on them from the rear window ledge. Typical of Smith's work, the eerily nostalgic portrayal of his own (and a shared American) childhood experience is atmospherically expressed in this important painting from a seminal period of the artist's work. With no formal academic training, Smith began to paint in 1974 and quickly found his own expressive artistic perspective that led to his first solo exhibition in 1979 and an invitation to represent the United States at the 1984 Venice Biennale. His work has been featured in exhibitions presented by major museums, and can be found housed in important institutions and private collections. Provenance: Private Collection, Houston, Texas;DW Gallery, Dallas, Texas, 1983;Exhibited at Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas

Catalogue Note: Colonel Charles Clifton (American, 1853-1928) was a major figure in shaping the automotive industry during its first decades. In 1897, he joined the George N. Pierce company - at that time a bicycle wheel manufacturer - and stayed on when it was reorganized as the Pierce-Arrow Motor Company, becoming chairman of the company’s board of directors in 1916. Clifton was also the founding president of the National Automotive Chamber of Commerce.
Clifton joined the Albright Art Gallery Board in 1914, serving initially on the finance committee before becoming vice president and then president, a role he held from 1918 until his death in 1928. In addition to his dedication to the Buffalo AKG, Clifton also served as president of Buffalo General Hospital, and during World War I, he was president of the Allied War Relief and of the Fatherless Children of France. In recognition of his support, especially for children orphaned by the war, Clifton was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
