HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, (FRENCH,
HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, (FRENCH, 1864-1901), LA REVUE BLANCHE, 1895, LITHOGRAPH IN COLORS, SIGHT: 48 X 33 IN., FRAME: 56 1/2 X 41 1/2 IN.HENRI de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, (French, 1864-1901) La Revue Blanche, 1895, lithograph in colors marked with monogram and date, l.l. and "imp. Edw. Ancourt Paris" l.r., with hexagonal French tax stamp in black ink, l.r. sight: 48 x 33 in., frame: 56 1/2 x 41 1/2 in. Provenance: Purchased in Paris by Mr. & Mrs. J.P. McWilliams; by descent in the family. Other Notes: In 1895, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to create the annual promotional poster for La Revue Blanche, the avant-garde Parisian art and literary magazine. Lautrec chose to depict Misia Natanson (1872-1950), the wife of one of the magazine's publishers, and a muse to many artists and writers associated with the journal. Lautrec chose to depict Misia figure skating, yet cropped the image so that her skates do not show. She glides gracefully across the sheet, the unbalanced composition and stark background together captivating the viewer, drawing his eye toward her elegant figure. This image has come to be one of the most iconic of Toulouse-Lautrec's posters, and serves an important example of the aesthetic of bohemian art and literary circle in belle-époque Paris. Condition: Condition: This work was professionally conserved in 1990 by Frank Fabry/Graphic Arts Conservation, Cleveland in conjunction with it being framed by The Wood Trader, Cleveland.
