JOHN LEJEUNE, MARINE COMMANDANT TLSTyped letter on Marine Corps HQ letterhead signed by John A. LeJeune, 13th commandant of the Corps, in 1925. Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune was named after him post WWII. Letter measures 10-3/8" x 8". This document is one of several dozen importantsigned pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collection of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII. Henry Lejeune (British, 1820-1904) "Garibaldi", oil on board, 15-1/2" x 11-1/4", unsigned, remnants of an old paper label en verso. Presented in a handsome period giltwood exhibition frame inscribed "H. Le Jeune Garibaldi - From a Photograph Taken at Naples by the Artist's Sister". Exhibited: Royal Academy 1840-1894. Reference: Christopher Wood, Dictionary of British Art, Volume IV, Victorian Painters. The subject, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), was an Italian patriot and General of the Risorgimento. He personally led military campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified Italy; he is considered an Italian national hero.
