Reference: Christopher Wood, Dictionary of British Art, Volume IV, Victorian Painters. The subject, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), was an Italian patriot and General of the Risorgimento. He personally led military campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified Italy; he is considered an Italian national hero.
