KNOX MARTIN (AMERICAN 1923-2022) A PAINTING, "POLAR FLO...KNOX MARTIN (American 1923-2022) A PAINTING, "Polar Flowers (Rimbaud)," 20TH CENTURY, acrylic on paper mounted on panel, signed (inscribed in the paint) L/L, "Knox;" 47'' x 41 1/4'', framed 58'' x 53''. Note: The inspiration for this work is likely taken from a famous poem by the French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891).BarbariansLong after the days and the seasons, and the people and the countries. The banner of raw meat against the silk of seas and arctic flowers;(they do not exist). Recovered from the of fanfares of heroism,--which still attack the heart and head,-- far from the old assassins.--Oh! the banner of raw meat against the silk of seas and arctic flowers;(they do not exist).-- Bliss! Live embers raining in gusts of frost.--Bliss!-- fires in the rain of the wind of diamondsflung out by the earth's heart eternally carbonized for us.--O world! (Far from the old retreats and the old flames, still heard, still felt.)Fire and foam. Magic, veering of chasms and clash of icicles against thestars.O bliss, O world, O music! And forms, sweat, eyesand long hair floating there. And white tears boiling,--O bliss!-- and the feminine voice reaching to the bottom of volcanoesand grottos of the arctic seas. The banner... Provenance: Gremellion & Co., Houston, Texas; Collection of Patrick Riggins, Ketchum, Idaho
Condition:
Signature was probably inscribed with the back of a paint brush. There are pin holes at corners where paper was mounted, "O G Fiber Glass," written in pencil along left edge (looks to be original to painting). The paper has been mounted on panel and then floated in a frame under plexiglass. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
