LUIGI KASIMIR "HEILIGENBLUT"
LUIGI KASIMIR "HEILIGENBLUT" COLOR ETCHINGLuigi Kasimir (United States/Austria, 1881 - 1962) color etching scene depicting Saint Vincent Church in Heiligenblut am Großglockner (Holy Blood by the Großglockner), Austria with the Alps in the background. Signed by the artist to the lower center & dated February 1924 under the location on the bottom right hand corner. Matted in an open face frame. Frame measures 27-1/2” in height by 24” in width with the sight image measuring 19-3/4” in height by 15-3/4” in width. All measurements are approximate. Frame is broken; artwork is in overall good condition consistent with age. Luigi Kasimir was an Austrian-born etcher and painter, born in 1881 in Pettau, a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the colored etching. Up until this point, prints were usually hand colored with the color being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir was a pioneer in the colored etching technique. He started with a sketch, usually in pastel, and then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates. He printed one after the other and applied the color on the plate--all done by hand. Luigi Kasimir died in 1962.
